I Am a Diabetic
Q : I am a diabetic. I am having difficulty finding shoes that fit my feet. My doctor told me that due to the swelling in my feet and my hammer toes, that I have to be careful with the types of shoes that I wear. I have been shopping for the right kind of shoes, but can’t find any that fit.
A : It is very important to wear proper shoes, especially if you are a diabetic. The wrong types of shoes can rub on the toes, causing sores that may not heal. If you do suffer from edema, finding shoes wide enough can also be a challenge. Did you know that Medicare pays for one pair of diabetic shoes per calendar year? Many commercial insurances will also pay for the majority if not all of the cost of the shoes. Your podiatrist can evaluate your feet and determine what type of diabetic shoe would be best for you.
