Do You Have Bunions?

Q : Do you have bunions?

A : Bunions are the enlargements of the great toe joint caused by a misaligned bone. This can cause pain in the joint or when wearing shoes. Bunions are usually an inherited condition and can become worse during pregnancy or wearing inappropriate shoes. Conservative treatment may include padding, orthotics or certain types of shoes.

When conservative treatment fails and the bunion becomes too painful, surgery may be necessary. There are many different surgical procedures depending on the severity of the bunion. There is minimal incision surgery. Minimal incision is more for mild to moderate bunions. The correction is made through 3 small incisions which usually don’t require sutures. The incisions are approximately 1/4 inch each. There is usually less pain with this procedure because there is less dissection into the soft tissue. Healing time is the same as the traditional bunion surgeries because the bone is being realigned. Aesthetically is looks nicer because there is no long bunion scar that may occur from traditional bunion surgery.
